Country-Specific Requirements

Messaging regulation in Africa is set at the national level. Each regulator defines its own rules for sender ID registration, content restrictions, opt-in requirements, and quiet hours. This page summarizes the requirements that apply when sending through AfriRoute, country by country.

info

Requirements change frequently. AfriRoute keeps registration templates current, but you remain the responsible party for the content you send. When in doubt, contact [email protected].

How Requirements Are Enforced

When you submit a message to https://api.afriroute.ai/api/v1/sms/send, AfriRoute routes it to a carrier in the destination country. That carrier applies the local regulator's rules before delivery. A message that violates local rules is rejected with a policy_violation error rather than billed, so getting your registration right up front avoids wasted spend.

Content Restrictions

Most African regulators prohibit or heavily restrict the following message categories regardless of country:

  • Gambling and betting promotions (banned outright in several markets)
  • Loans and high-interest credit offers without licensing disclosure
  • Adult content
  • Political messaging during election blackout windows
  • Misleading "you have won" or lottery-style content

Transactional messages (OTPs, order updates, banking alerts) face the fewest restrictions and the highest priority routing.

Quiet Hours

Promotional SMS is time-restricted in most markets. AfriRoute can automatically hold promotional messages submitted during quiet hours and release them at the next permitted window:

await fetch('https://api.afriroute.ai/api/v1/sms/send', {
method: 'POST',
headers: { 'Authorization': 'Bearer $AFRIROUTE_API_KEY', 'Content-Type': 'application/json' },
body: JSON.stringify({
to: '+2348012345678',
from: 'MyBrand',
message: 'Weekend sale: 20% off everything! Reply STOP to opt out.',
category: 'promotional',
respect_quiet_hours: true // holds and releases at 8am local time
})
});

Maintaining Compliance

  1. Register sender IDs per country before launching β€” see Sender ID Registration.
  2. Format numbers correctly in E.164 β€” see Numbering Rules.
  3. Keep consent records for every recipient β€” see Data Protection.
  4. Tag message category (transactional or promotional) so AfriRoute can apply the right routing and quiet-hour logic.
  5. Honor opt-outs automatically; AfriRoute suppresses any number that replies STOP.
